Sister School Partnership between Bayview School (Vancouver, Canada) & Sundrawati School (Dolakha, Nepal)

As the 104 year-old Bayview Elementary school in Vancouver, Canada is set to be demolished and rebuilt after being deemed ‘high risk’ in the event of an earthquake, the school has just recently partnered with Sundrawati School in Dolakha, Nepal. The partnership led by Dr. Sara Shneiderman (Associate Professor of Anthropology and School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, UBC), whose daughter attends Bayview Elementary, has created an important learning opportunity for students of both schools. A group of students from Bayview have become penpals with students at Sundrawati to learn about the devastating effects of Nepal’s 2015 earthquakes which damaged 7,500 schools throughout the country. The partnership has made students at Bayview more aware of the consequences of such natural disasters should an earthquake strike Vancouver as it did in Nepal.
